Jorge de Abreu
Jorge de Abreu is a founding partner of the leading Portuguese law firm Abreu & Marques e Associados, (www.amsa.pt) who are long standing Corporate members of the Chamber.
Abreu & Marques began in 1972 and was one the first Portuguese law firms to open offices abroad, beginning with their London branch which opened in 1987 and became a member of The Law Society. In 1992 the firm opened an office in Funchal to handle business with the Madeira International Business Centre. Currently it has associations with law firms in Angola and Mozambique and correspondents throughout Europe, the United States and in Brazil, via its membership of The Law Firm Network. In other areas of the world it has correspondents via its membership with Praelegal, another law firm network based in Germany, Istanbul and Qatar.
The firm specialises in commercial law, banking law, mergers and acquisitions, taxes, litigation, arbitration and intellectual property.
Jorge was born in 1946 and graduated from Lisbon University in 1968. He became a member of the Portuguese Bar in 1970, since when he has practiced law. He also has a degree in Comparative Law from Strasbourg University. In Europe he is a member of the International Bar Association, the International Tax Planning Association, and the Union Internationale des Avocats. In the Portuguese Bar Association he has been a member of the General Council, President of the Law Firms Institute, and a member of the High Council of the Bar.
Besides practicing law, Jorge has also been an active director of country funds, chairman of the management company of a property fund, and a director of several companies in the fields of commodities and trading, the car industry, and property development. He is also chairman of the general meetings of shareholders in numerous companies.
Jorge has a house in central London and has been an active member of the Carlton Club for many years. He speaks English, French and Spanish and his practice areas are commercial and companies’ law, mergers and acquisitions, banking law, real estate, energy, intellectual property and arbitration.
