This year will see our Chamber Corporate members the Sovereign Group launch the inaugural Sovereign Portuguese Art Prize.
Associação SAF is the Portuguese arm of The Sovereign Art Foundation (SAF) and was established in 2021. SAF run several contemporary art prizes around the world, and the Sovereign Portuguese Art Prize will benefit artists living in Portugal or of the Portuguese diaspora by putting them on a world stage, whilst raising funds for disadvantaged children using expressive arts as a means of education, communication and engagement in Portugal.
This award is set to be the biggest annual art prize in Portugal, and it will run concurrently to the SAF Students Prize Portugal, now in its 6th year.
The Finalists’ Exhibition will tour the following venues in Portugal:
- Palacio das Artes Fundação da Juventude, Porto
- Sociedade Nacional de Belas Artes, Lisbon
- Museu Berardo, Estremoz
The shortlisted works will be exhibited firstly at Palacio das Artes in Porto in April 2022, before moving to Sociedade Nacional de Belas-Artes in Lisbon and the Museu Berardo in Estremoz, followed possibly by a further exhibition in the Algarve.
The Grand Prize winner will receive €25,000.
The public will also be invited to vote for their favourite artwork, with the most popular artist being awarded €2,000. The shortlisted artworks, aside from the Grand Prize winner, will then be sold. Proceeds will be split evenly between the artists and Associação SAF, to be spent in Portuguese arts education.
